Hakodate/Sapporo are really beautiful in winter, but they also experience Siberian-tier winters so while Hokkaido could be fun I would not recommend a winter Hokkaido trip unless you are Canadian/Russian.

>>1649886>>1649903The Shinkansen to Sendai (3 hours from Tokyo) or Hakodate (6 hours from Tokyo) should get you to the snow line if you rally wanna see snow, and then a week-long JR pass pays for itself since you'd have to pay for the trip from Narita to downtown Tokyo anyways which is about 1/3rd of the JR costs right there alone. As great as Sapporo is there's no Shinkansen past Hakodate so you're talking a 6 hour train ride roughly from Hakodate to Sapporo- at that point it would be more affordable to snag an ~$80 round-trip flight on a puddle jumper from Narita to Sapporo airport.
There's enough stuff to do in Sapporo if you like hiking to make a trip outta it that way, but then at that point I would (personally) just get the JR pass in Narita, take a one-way flight to Sapporo to save time, and then train my way back down to Tokyo over the course of the week stopping a day or two in each city along the way.
They run "evening" trains where you would leave Sapporo at night and get to Hakodate /late/ but I'd take the limited Hokuto express (3-4 hour ride instead) since they usually have a ~2PM train and then it would give you the entire day in Sapporo before you get to Hakodate, sign in to a local hostel for like $50 (fuck hoteru in Hakodate, hostels are comfy and the chinks won't steal your shit that time of year), and then you're there in Hakodate all taken care of at 7/8PM to hit the night life around the downtown (or get an early rise to climb the mountain the next morning).
